Decentralized Systems Decentralized systems involve individual heating and/or cooling units that condition specific zones or rooms in a home. They do not require air ducts and offer more flexibility and customization options. The most common types of decentralized systems include:


  1. Ductless mini-splits consist of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units connected by refrigerant lines. Each indoor unit can be controlled independently to adjust the temperature of a specific zone or room. Ductless mini-splits are popular in smaller spaces or as supplemental systems, as they deliver class-leading comfort and efficiency without the need for ductwork. However, they have higher upfront costs, lower aesthetics, higher installation complexity, and potential refrigerant leaks.

  2. Window or Portable Air Conditioner: Window or portable air conditioners are self-contained units that cool a single room by exhausting hot air outside through a window or a hose. They are commonly used as temporary or emergency solutions due to their ease of installation and operation. However, they have lower efficiency, higher noise levels, lower security, and potential moisture problems.

  3. Electric baseboard heaters use electric resistance coils to generate heat. They are typically installed along the baseboards of a room and can be controlled individually. While they are easy to install, they can be less energy-efficient compared to other systems.

  4. Combo Heating Systems combine different heating technologies to provide flexibility and efficiency. For example, a system may integrate a gas furnace with an electric heat pump to optimize heating performance based on external temperatures
